Winter Time Blues

Feeling a tad Melancholy? Have the winter blues finally hit?

I have been feeling them coming on…

For me it’s more like an itch that something is just not right It has been growing slowly over the past two weeks and no matter how much meditation or positive thoughts it just wouldn’t seem to go away…..

Then it hit me! As I was taking a lap around my office, my face feeling the sunshine warm my skin, I realized why I was feeling down. I haven’t been spending regular time in the sun! During the summer I was going on walks, doing yard work, and taking every opportunity to be out in the sun. Now I am sitting in my office trying to stay warm.

With “modern” society it’s easy to forget the simple fact that humans evolved to be outdoors most of the day.

The sun provides a steady source of vitamin D which is extremely important for a cascade of reasons, most famously bone health. BUT did you know it is also a free antidepressant!?!?! Recent research has shown a link between reduced depression and higher levels of Vitamin D.

Another added benefit is that early morning sun exposure stimulates melatonin production (your sleep hormone) to help you get to sleep quicker and have more restful sleep. And we all know sleep is a key part of having a strong immune system over the winter.

If you’re also human (lol) you will find that during the winter time blues or with poor sleep you are more enticed to have a sugary snack to bump up your mood or energy. Some simple sun exposure is an easy step towards reducing emotional eating and evening snacks.

So my simple ask is that you love on your body and mental health! Step outside for 10-20 minutes. Let the sun hit your face! Take off your glasses, hats, and hoods to feel the full effects of the sun.
